On Confessions of a Surf Lady, Dip founder Kate shared her refreshing take on what sustainability really looks like in action. From beach cleanups and refill culture to calling out rushed eco-trends and building an authentic community, Kate reminds us that protecting the ocean doesn’t have to be perfect.. it just has to start.

Good Deeds Are Contagious

“Good deeds are contagious. If you go to the beach and start picking up garbage, you’ll notice other people will start too. It’s a cool human experiment. And it’s the same with product choices.”

The ripple effect is real: one small action inspires another. Dip’s products were designed to create that same contagious momentum.. one full size shampoo bar replaces three plastic bottles, one dry oil replaces four different products. Small swaps add up quickly.

Beyond Greenwashing: Why Performance Matters

Kate didn’t shy away from calling out the frustration many people feel with “eco” products that don’t deliver.

“How many eco-friendly deodorants are you going to buy before you’re like, f it, I’m going back to Secret? … Sustainability only works if the product works.”

Dip exists to prove you don’t have to choose between eco-friendly and effective. Performance is non-negotiable because when people actually love using a product, they’ll keep choosing it.

Big Business vs. Real Change

Kate shared her skepticism about the plastic-free “boom” of 2020–2021, when major corporations copied indie brands to cash in.

“Fast-to-market brands left a sour taste. People paid more, got less, and walked away thinking sustainability doesn’t matter.”

Dip takes the opposite approach: slow, intentional development. Every formula, every refill system, every fragrance choice is vetted for safety, performance, and long-term impact.

Joy as a Contagious Force

Sustainability at Dip isn’t about finger-wagging or guilt. It’s about joy.

“Misery is contagious, but joy is its own special kind of contagious.”

Trail runners, surfers, and outdoor lovers, the communities Dip connects with, spread sustainability by sharing what they love, not what they fear. When a friend has a great hair day, they talk about it. When someone finds a refill system that works, they share it. That joy spreads.

The Dip Community: Real, Fun & Unfiltered

Kate emphasized that Dip’s social presence isn’t polished corporate talk—it’s real people, sarcasm, and joy.

“I talk to our customers through Instagram like I talk to my friends. Our feed is full of joy, sarcasm, and sometimes making fun of the beauty industry. It’s about being human.”

That authenticity makes Dip feel less like a brand and more like a community. Whether it’s sharing hilarious Halloween edits or snarky takes on the industry, Dip proves sustainability can be fun.
